There are quotes you admire… and then there are quotes that walk beside you.
This has been one of mine.
Not because it sounds poetic… though it is.
Not because it’s famous… though it should be.
But because it describes, with unsettling accuracy, what it feels like to begin something meaningful without guarantees.
Faith Isn’t Certainty. It’s Movement.
When people talk about faith, it’s often framed as confidence. Conviction. Knowing.
But this quote dismantles that idea entirely.
Faith, according to Dr. King, isn’t seeing the whole staircase.
It’s stepping anyway.
That distinction matters, especially when you’re doing something that asks you to trust yourself before you feel ready.
Writing Without a Map
When I began writing my first book, I didn’t have the whole plan.
I didn’t know:
- how it would be received
- whether it would resonate
- if I were “qualified enough”
- or what doors it might (or might not) open
What I did have was a sense that this book needed to be written, and that not writing it would cost me something internally.
So I took a step.
Then another.
And then I found myself doing things I hadn’t previously imagined:
publishing… building another company… claiming the title author before I fully believed it myself.
None of that came with a visible staircase.
Just the next step.
The Illusion of Readiness
We often tell ourselves we’ll begin once we’re more prepared.
More certain.
More confident.
More credentialed.
More “something.”
But the truth is, clarity rarely comes before action.
It comes because of it.
Faith doesn’t wait for the fog to lift. It moves through it.
Going All In Doesn’t Mean Knowing Everything
As I work on my next book, The Power of Going All In, this idea has become even more central to my life.
Going all in doesn’t mean recklessness.
It doesn’t mean blind leaps or ignoring fear.
It means choosing not to let uncertainty be the thing that stops you.
It means saying:
I may not see the whole staircase, but I trust the step I’m standing on.
And then allowing that step to become the foundation for the next one.
Honoring the Legacy, Living the Lesson
On Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, we honor a legacy built not on perfect visibility, but on courage, conviction, and faith in action.
Dr. King didn’t see the entire outcome of his work while he was living it.
He saw the next right step and took it anyway.
That kind of faith changes lives.
It changes movements.
And sometimes, it quietly changes one person’s path at a time.
